Timuchin Afandiyev is an Azerbaijani literary and art critic, a member of

the Azerbaijan Writers' Union, the Azerbaijan Artists' Union, the Azerbaijan

Theatre Workers' Union, Doctor of Philological Sciences, Professor, Honored

Art Worker of the Azerbaijan Republic, Honored Scientist of the Azerbaijan

Republic, Rector of the Azerbaijan State University of Culture and Arts (1987-

2014), Rector of the Baku Choreography Academy (from 2014-2021).

 Timuchin Ilyas oglu Afandiyev was born on July 17, 1945 in Baku in the

family of Ilyas Afandiyev - the famous Azerbaijani writer and playwright. 

In 1963, he entered the Faculty of Oriental Studies at Baku State University.

After graduating from the university in 1968, T. Afandiyev worked at the Youth

Organization Committee. 

In 1969, he was accepted to the postgraduate course of the Azerbaijan

National Academy of Sciences, and in 1972 he defended his thesis on "The

Creative Work of Gusein Javid" and received a degree of Candidate of Philological

Sciences (PHd). 

In 1972-1977, T. Afandiyev worked as a researcher at the Institute of

Literature, named after Nizami of the Azerbaijan National Academy of Sciences,

and in 1977-1978 he was a research secretary. 

In 1989, by the decision of the Higher Attestation Commission under the

USSR Council of Ministers, he was awarded the title of Professor of Art History,

and in 1999 he defended his doctoral thesis on "History and Art in Romantic

Dramaturgy" and received the degree of Doctor of Philological Sciences (Habil).

In 1977-2014, T. Afandiyev worked at the Azerbaijani State University of

Culture and Arts: first as a senior lecturer, then associate professor, and since 1987

- professor. 

In 1978-1987, Timuchin Afandiyev was the dean of the joint faculty of theater

and fine arts, and in 1987-2014 rector of the Azerbaijan State University of Culture

and Arts. During the leadership of prof.T. Afandiyev, the Institute of

Arts, consisting of only two specialties, received the status of a university and

became the Azerbaijan State University of Culture and Arts with training in 32

specialties. 

On December 26, 2014, Professor T. Afandiyev was appointed rector of the

newly established Baku Academy of Choreography. 

T. Afandiyev, whose first literary-critical articles were published in 1973 on

the pages of "Ulduz" ("Star") magazine, later became the author of hundreds of

scientific-publicistic articles, numerous books and monographs published in

Azerbaijan and abroad. 

Professor Timuchin Afandiyev participated in many international scientific

conferences as a speaker; he has special merits in the promotion of Azerbaijani culture and art in the United States, England, Italy, Turkey, Iran, Egypt, and many other countries.
